Stephenville, the main service center for the entire region
with a population of over 8000, was originally known as Indian Creek
but was renamed by a group of French Acadian settlers in 1844 for a
member of their party, Stephen LeBlanc. The community gained stature
during WWII and the cold war when the United States established the
Earnest Harmon Air Base just outside the town. Many of the American
buildings still exist today and the town celebrates Harmon Field Day
every two years as thousands gather to watch static aircraft displays
and the air show put on by pilots of the NATO countries.

The town offers a shopping mall, craft shops, retail businesses,
hotels, night clubs, cafes, restaurants, aquatic center, golf course,
and other services in this airport town.
